Quote of the Day

Posted by ALmod on November 19, 2008

From Barry Goldwater:

“You don’t have to be straight to be in the military; you just have to be able to shoot straight.”

Thank You, Kyle Whitmire

Posted by ALmod on November 14, 2008

I know that you tend to visit on occasion, so I’ll go ahead and thank you here.

What I saw in the Birmingham Weekly today reminded me of why I don’t take this stinking blog down.

It’s not really reporting, mind you.  Mostly, I’m just sharing my “opinions” on stuff that other people reported.  Sometimes I wonder why people even bother to visit.  Why on earth would I bother sharing what I think?

Your story reminded me about how important it is to think and have an “argument.”

And this particular paragraph:

Opinion is a broken word, overused and abused. Its meaning is unhinged. How many quarrels end with ‘Well, that’s your opinion’? Rather than refuting some imbecile’s diatribe, we say, ‘You are entitled to your opinion.’  And there’s my least favorite: ‘You know how opinions are like assholes? Everyone has one and they all stink.’  I hear that one a lot, mostly from assholes who never had an original thought.”

That made me laugh.  Very true!

Taking Some Time Off to Chill (With) My Wrath

Posted by ALmod on November 13, 2008

Well, the elections are over, and Blizzard Entertainment has now sold me a long awaited expansion to the game I’m addicted to.  Wrath of the Lich King was released at midnight, and as of about 1am this morning, I have a shadow priest on Terokkar realm to level to 80 and a brand new death knight on Arygos server named “Joebiden”.  (I couldn’t help myself.  A guildie on Arygos renamed his rogue “Sarahpalin”.)

I’ll still be posting occasionally, but until I get all of my characters leveled and get bored with the new content, I may be posting less for the next few months or so.

Joe the Pundit Deserves a Break

Posted by ALmod on November 12, 2008

I really wish folks would stop making a big deal over Joe Scarborough lettting the f-bomb slip.  It’s a live show, and these things happen.  And now MSNBC is freaking out and giving him a 7-second delay.

Even Scarborough seemed surprised by his slip-up, which was made when he was quoting someone else.  I think those of us who are honest will admit that we’ve done it before, too.  That doesn’t mean that there should be no penalty for slipping up, but I think that folks who are continuing to hammer him on his gaffe are going a bit too far.  Lighten up, folks.  It’s not like he staged a “wardrobe malfunction” or anything.

Revisiting the GOP

Posted by ALmod on November 12, 2008

Ron Paul wrote a commentary for CNN addressing it, today, and I have to admit that he’s spot on.  It seems like everyone else is addressing this in spades, so I figured I would add to what Dr. Paul has to say on the matter.

Yes, I think that straying from the party’s core message of limited government and fiscal responsibility is part of it, but I want to make note of a couple other things.  I disagree with Paul and a few others that Reagan fits into the same category as Barry Goldwater.  I like Reagan to a point, but his was one of the first Republican administrations to take the party in the wrong direction.  His was the administration that gave us George H. W. Bush, Donald Rumsfeld, and Dick Cheney.  1980 was when neoconservatism started to really take over the party, and Barry Goldwater was not exactly thrilled by the direction Reagan took the country in.  In particular, he had some harsh words for Reagan on the Iran-Contra Affair.

The problem with neoconservatism is, as I agree with Goldwater, it abandons conservatism alltogether in order to pander to the Christian right.  Being a Christian, I don’t mind being pandered to, but I don’t like the government sticking its nose into my personal business, and I don’t like them sticking their nose into my religion.  I see a fine line between allowing religion to dictate governing decisions and allowing governing decisions to dictate religion.  You can’t really have one without the other.

So now we have a Republican party who believes that nation building is okay.  They believe that allowing the federal government into your private business is okay.  They believe that increased spending is okay.  They believe that unnecessary war is okay. They believe that it’s okay to ignore portions of the U.S. Constitution.  And why do they believe this?  Because the Christian right needs them to believe this in order to achieve the ideal they have for this country.  Nevermind the practicality (or lack thereof) of doing these things.

The other big problem that I see is the fairly recent strategy of winning at all costs– particularly winnig by dividing the country.  The general attitude that I’ve noticed among Republicans is an “us versus them” attitude.  Phrases like “real Americans” get thrown around.  “Liberals” is a slur.  Instead of encouraging all Americans to come together and work together for the common good, there is a message being conveyed that they don’t want the best for our country and they are bad.  They are not as good as we are, and we should look down our noses at them.  They are not as moral as we are.  They are snobby elitists.  It’s never implied that they might want what’s best for this country as well– they just happen to disagree on the process of getting there.

When I heard Barack Obama’s “Red States, Blue States” speech in 2004, I knew then that he had the potential to one day be president.  Why?  Well, the message of “change” wasn’t just in government policy.  I notice a genuine desire among Democrats and moderates to bring this country back together.  It was a key element that remained in Obama’s speeches at the Democratic Convention and on election day.  I was born in 1979 and have never had the benefit of living in a United States of America that lived up to its name.  Rather, I’ve been raised in a Red and Blue States of America.

If there is only one “change” that Obama can make, I hope that this is the one– for both this country and the political parties.

Artur Davis Still Being Considered

Posted by ALmod on November 12, 2008

UPDATE: Thanks to regular reader (and Alabama I&R supporter) Don S. for helping me to answer a question he asked about how Davis would be replaced.  According to the U.S. Constitution, the governor would call a special election to replace him.

A glance at CNN this morning shows that folks are still buzzing about Artur Davis being considered for U.S. Attorney General.  Davis has said before that he doesn’t think he’ll be asked and that he doesn’t want the job, but you know what they say about someone protesting too much.

I think he should take the job, and I think it should be offered.  There are a few different reasons.

First, remember how excited we were in Alabama when Condi Rice was appointed?  I’m willing to bet that Barack Obama wouldn’t mind scoring a few points in a red state.  Two, Davis is still fairly young and new, but he’s qualified.  I like younger, newer folks.  They tend to think outside the box, and I think given our current situation, it’s what we need.

But why would he consider taking the job if he wants to run for governor in 2010?  Well, I don’t think he should run in 2010.  It’s too soon, and I think he knows that.  Why would you run if you’re pretty sure you’re going to lose?  Rather, I’d like to see him run in 2014 or 2018.  And with at least one term of service under an Obama administration under his belt, he’d be an even more desirable candidate for governor– particularly if (heaven forbid) he ever ends up running against Troy King.  If Obama is re-elected in 2012, Davis can tout his connections as favorable for the people of Alabama.

Just another reason to scream, “Roll Tide Roll!”

Posted by ALmod on November 11, 2008

I picked up my People magazine today, and who did I see?  Eva Longoria (of Desperate Housewives) in a Bama jersey with a big ol’ #7 plastered on it.

Longoria is a friend of singer Sara Evans, who is married to former Tide quarterback Jay Barker.  (An interesting “Six Degrees” twist…  My husband’s grandmother used to drive Barker to school.)
